Conference History:

Background

The GIS/CAMA Conference was conceived as a forum for IAAO and URISA members to educate themselves on the integration of GIS technology and CAMA valuation systems.  Many assessment jurisdictions maintain both GIS and CAMA systems as completely separate functions, thereby failing to utilize these technologies to their full potential.  The purpose of the conference is to bring both GIS and CAMA disciplines to the same table for discussion, so that each can learn from the other.

The challenges brought on from integrating GIS and CAMA often cross into related topics such as:  Integration of other departments like the deed recorder/clerk or treasurer/collector; open records laws and policies; database management; computer hardware, software and networks; systems and application development; CAMA modeling; Internet applications; property addresses and identifiers.

The primary target audience are the senior technicians, programmers, appraisers, analysts and technical managers who are directly involved in implementing these technologies, whether they work for the assessor or some other department.  We make some provision for education of the novice in these fields by providing beginners’ workshops and seminars, but the primary focus has been on more advanced topics and in-depth case studies best suited for experienced professionals. The conference also provides opportunities for networking and relationship building with other technical people who share similar objectives and challenges.

Our goal is to provide a good educational program to these individuals at a reasonable cost.  This is best accomplished by holding the conference at reasonably priced destinations, and by keeping social activities to a single event.  Rotating the conference to different regions of the country also allows more people to participate, many who return in following years.

Technical vendors involved with the assessment and GIS industries have always been an important feature of the conference.  Indeed, it is the vendor community that needs to hear a common voice from the multiple disciplines and departments as to the value of integrated solutions, or at least the ability of systems to communicate technically with other vendors’ solutions.  A vendor exhibition hall is hosted during the conference and special vendor produced sessions are conducted on the last day as a forum for companies to showcase their products.   This is an opportunity for vendors to directly reach the people who recommend products and services to their administrators, and for attendees to experience the latest products and services available in the marketplace.
